Sick leave and sick pay in Estonia 2026
During sick leave the benefit is paid by the employer and the Health Insurance Fund – both at 70% of wages, but on different days and calculation bases. This guide explains who pays which part and how the benefit is calculated.
Who pays for the sick days?
| Sick days | Payer | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | own liability | no benefit |
| Days 4–8 | employer | 70% of the average wage |
| From day 9 | Health Insurance Fund | 70% (daily cap €126.87) |
How is the benefit calculated?
The employer calculates its part from the employee's average wage of recent months. The Health Insurance Fund benefit is based on your previous calendar year's income subject to social tax: daily income = annual income ÷ 365, the benefit is 70% of that. Income tax is withheld from both benefits. The sick pay calculator gives the exact amount. How long can sick leave last?
The benefit is generally paid for up to 182 consecutive calendar days per illness case; the duration is decided by the doctor. Work accidents, occupational diseases and pregnancy-related leaves have more favourable terms (benefit from the second day or a higher rate). The doctor opens the sick leave electronically and the data moves to the Health Insurance Fund automatically.Related calculators
