Car tax calculator (Estonia)

Per the official EMTA rules, the annual tax (M1) = €50 base part + CO₂ part (free up to 117 g/km, €3/g at 118–150, €3.50/g at 151–200, €4/g above 200) + weight part (€0.40/kg above 2,000 kg capped at €400; plug-in hybrids from 2,200 kg; EVs from 2,400 kg capped at €440). NEDC figures are multiplied by 1.21. If no CO₂ figure exists, it is calculated as power × 0.29 + curb weight × 0.07 + age × 4.92, minus 35 for diesel, 39/52 for petrol/diesel full hybrids (capped at 350 g/km). The CO₂ and weight parts decrease with age from year 5 (0.92) to 15 (0.10); cars over 20 years pay only the base part. Ages 16–19 use a linear estimate here. Vehicle age is counted in full years as of 1 January of the tax year – enter the year of first registration and the calculator derives the age.

Frequently asked questions

How is the annual car tax calculated in 2026?
The annual tax has a base part (€50), a CO₂ part (stepped by emissions) and a gross-weight part. The total is adjusted by the vehicle age coefficient.
Do electric cars pay car tax in Estonia?
Yes, the motor vehicle tax also applies to electric cars. The CO₂ part is zero, but the base part applies and the weight part starts above 2,400 kg.
How and when is the car tax paid?
The Tax and Customs Board calculates the tax from registry data and sends a tax notice; the annual tax is paid in two installments.
